Exercise Boredom

When was the last time you were truly quiet? With constant engagement to the world through technology, most of us do not experience prolonged silences. It has become so rare that for most – it’s uncomfortable, and we avoid it at all costs.

With constant noise and busyness, we become distracted thinkers. It’s almost as if we’re afraid of what we might think if we let ourselves truly be quiet. The inability to do so is negatively impacting our creative minds, and also our work.

One of the most insightful things I have learned about creative work is this: Allow yourself to experience boredom.

Allow yourself to be in silence, free of distractions and background noises. Get to the point where you think you’re finished for the day, and then be still. Give yourself time to just think and look at the possibilities: ‘free time’ devoted to your work.

It’s a simple concept, but one worth exercising. Here’s to freed thinking, through quiet and a healthy dose of boredom.
